The Ilene Senturia Award

The Central Agency for Jewish Education is pleased to announce that the Ilene Senturia Israel Merit Scholarship will be presented again this year to an 11th grade student participating in the Jewish Community High School program. The recipient of this $2,000 award will apply their scholarship to an approved Israel educational program of his or her choice.

The Ilene Senturia Israel Merit Scholarship, first awarded in 1992, was established in 1991 by Richard Senturia, his family and friends after Ilene passed away in 1990. She had served on the Board of CAJE. and was the Chairperson of the Jewish Community High school from 1984-1988. With her love, dedication and hard work, she displayed the importance of Judaism through support and encouragement of our Jewish youth today.

This scholarship is unique in that it requires extended dedication and a long-term commitment to Jewish learning on the part of the recipient. The award will be given to a student who has been an active participant in the Jewish Community High School program, now JOLT (Jewish Opportunities and Learning for Teens) and has achieved an exemplary record in attendance, participation, and scholastic excellence. The recipient must also serve in his/her community, either through volunteer work or by performing other mitzvot on a regular basis.

The Central Agency for Jewish Education and the Jewish Federation annouced the availability of merit-based scholarships for high school students participating in Israel experience program in 2005.

Israel scholarships will be awarded to two outstanding teenagers on the basis of their activities in the Jewish Community and their commitment to continued Jewish education and participation.

The two awards, which are allocated from the Stuart I. Pessin scholarship fund, compliment the existing Israel grant program that is already administered by CAJE and distributed on the basis of financial need.  The merit-based scholarships provide an alternative means or select students to receive community funds by demonstraing their commitment to Judaism and the St. Louis Jewish community.

The Pessin Fund recipients join the winners of the Jewish Opportunites and Learning for Teens community high school's Ilene Senturia Israel Merit Scholarship.  Upon return, students will also be expected to speak about their experiences in Israel to their peers and the community as advocates for Israel travel and educational programs.
