History

CAJE's origins grew out of a need to enhance the quality of local Jewish education. After two years of planning, the agency began operations in 1971, with the financial support of the Jewish Federation. From the beginning, CAJE founders understood that the focus of the agency's operations should be on educators as well as students. Toward that end, CAJE established as an early priority providing advanced schooling for teachers, as well as other opportunities for professional education. Other goals were: developing programs for high school youth, assisting day schools, and initiating a variety of support services for congregational schools.

During those early years, the current structure of the CAJE governing body took shape. Overseeing the agency was a board of directors consisting of representatives from virtually every segment of the Jewish community.   Central to the burgeoning organization's growth and success was a dedicated corps of lay leaders and volunteers, talented first-rate professional staff, and a team of committed teachers. CAJE operations were streamlined with the establishment of commissions, committees and departments that were charged with responsibility for certain areas of the agency's functioning.

Over the years, CAJE's responsibilities have become broader and more varied. A major thrust of CAJE programming has been in the area of family education. A second area of growth for CAJE has been in teen programming with the establishment of the Israel Experience Center and new Jewish Community High School. Teacher education and recognition also have expanded in recent years.

As we seek to create programs that meet the diverse intellectual and emotional needs of children, youth and adults, we are increasingly aware that, to have lasting impact, Jewish education must have the support of the entire Jewish community. It must become a priority issue on the communal Jewish agenda. Our task is to continue to create meaningful programs that touch the lives of each and every member of our Jewish community. We are their link with their past, and a key to their Jewish future.
