CAJE needs your help. Due to cuts in Federation
allocation, signigicant reductions in endowment income and increase
in program costs, CAJE educational services are in jeopardy. History
has shown that when Jewish education is in jeopardy, the entire
Jewish community is put at risk.
“Give me [the city of] Yavneh and
its sages.” Yochanan ben Zakkai spoke those words almost 2,000 years
ago, in the year 70. They deserve to be engraved at the entrance
to CAJE's offices. If Yochanan hadn't spoken them, there'd be no
such thing as CAJE.
Fearful that Judaism might not survive the destruction of Jerusalem,
Yochanan had himself smuggled out of the city and surrendered to
the Roman general Vespasian, who Yochanan predicted would someday
become emperor. Pleased, Vespasian said, “Make one request and I
will grant it.” Yochanan responded with a sentence that changed
the course of history: “Give me Yavneh and its sages.” Yavneh then
became the center for Jewish life and learning.
Yochanan ben Zakkai's genius was to realize that without schools
the whole Jewish people was doomed to destruction. With
a few short words-- “Give me Yavneh and its sages”--Yochanan ensured
the survival of the Jewish people.
That's why the Friends of CAJE Campaign
founded two “givers' circle” groups:
The Ben Zakkai Society for those who contribute
$1,000 or more, and The Yavneh Society
for those who contribute $500 or more.
We hope you'll seriously consider being a founder of one of these
two circles. Obviously, we're not restricting contributions
to a $500 minimum. We are urging you to give as
much as you can--whatever the amount may be. As you well know, our
need is real--and our need is urgent.
Thank you for your support.
