Sonia Dobinsky Receives the 2011 Fred A. Goldstein Memorial Service Award

Sonia Dobinsky, Executive Director of the Central Agency for Jewish Education, and Lori Wishne, Jewish Federation Assistant Director of Development, are recipients of the 2011 Fred A. Goldstein Memorial Service Award for professional excellence. Bob Millstone, Jewish Federation Chair, presented the award at a Federation Board of Trustees meeting recently.

Dobinsky has been working in the Jewish community since 1993, joining the CAJE staff in 1998, where she started as a part-time program staff person, became interim Executive Director in 2006 and Executive Director in 2007. Prior to joining CAJE, she served as interim Religious School Director at Temple Israel and was a limited partner at Edward Jones where she was a trainer and human resource professional. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications from Northwestern University and is working toward a graduate degree in Human Resource Development. Sonia is also a past Board member at Saul Mirowitz Day School and Temple Israel. She has been married 27 years to Dan and they are the parents of Melissa, 23, a teacher, and Jodi, 20, a college student.

After the award presentation, Dobinsky explained how a once “corporate trainer” became a Jewish community professional. She credits Debbie Bram’s personal outreach. Dobinsky moved from chairing TI’s Purim Carnival to interim religious school director when she met Joan Wolchansky at CAJE.

Dobinsky described how her life in this community has come full circle. Her 4th grade music teacher became the cantor who was her daughter’s Bat Mitzvah tutor. The Edward Jones’ head of accounting was organist at that same Bat Mitzvah. One of her mother’s social work students is a Holocaust Museum docent and another a Federation contract employee. Her senior counselor at a day camp taught her children’s preschool. She added, “I never would have guessed that my name would join the list of Goldstein awardees along with Mary McKeever who was my mother’s first boss when she moved us from Syracuse, NY, to St. Louis.”

The Goldstein Award was established in 1965 by Ely Goldstein and his wife, Mary, to honor the memory of Ely’s late brother, Fred, who died in 1934. The Award recognizes outstanding professionals for their innovative achievements in Jewish community
